Home Energy Plan

“I am very satisfied with the service. The workmen were excellent, they were a brilliant team and cleaned up after themselves – they even took all their rubbish with them!”

Mr L lives in a 2-bedroom, end-of-terrace house, located in the Meadows, Nottingham, and had been dealing with a cold and draughty home which also suffered from mould in the bathroom.

I am very satisfied with the service … I have had no problems at all.
— Mr L

Hoping to get straight to the root of the problem, Mr L got in touch with NEP to enquire about home improvement grants, drawn to the Green Grants Scheme and the possibility of receiving fully funded Solar PV Panels.

Whilst he was interested in sustainable energy generation, NEP identified that he would benefit from a free Home Energy Plan which identified the necessary fabric-first steps to improve the energy efficiency of his terraced property. Worth £600, Home Energy plans are developed from a home assessment and tailored to the home. Importantly, the plans prioritise insulation, ventilation and heat retention as the logical first steps to home energy efficiency.

His home energy plan revealed that a lack of ventilation was causing a build-up of condensation and mould in the home. During the assessment, NEP spoke to Mr L about his day-to-day experiences in the home, noting down that he found the study particularly colder than other rooms in winter.

The plan signposted Mr L to the first changes that needed to be made, detailing home improvement measures which included:

  • A top-up of insulation in the loft (the insulation is now 270mm and has increased by 170mm)

  • A new ventilation fan to be installed in the bathroom

  • The replacement of all fluorescent bulbs in the home with new LED bulbs

Mr L said he is delighted that the space now has ventilation and is eager to move on to renovating his bathroom.

The top-up in loft insulation will improve the heating of Mr L’s home as well as reduce his heating costs. He said that he feels reassured that he will benefit from additional loft insulation as the house had been very difficult to keep warm – particularly in the main bedroom and study - in the winter months they used a fan heater to keep Mrs L warm when she was working.
